Why answering inside a game is not the same as answering a quiz

In a quiz the question arrives, you choose, and you wait. Here the answer is somewhere in the arena and you have to go and get it, so committing costs you something: a wrong turn is time, position and the token you did not reach. Deciding under that pressure is closer to how the knowledge gets used than picking one of four options at rest.

What it is good for, and what it is not

It suits facts with one clean answer: capitals, dates, definitions, vocabulary, formulae. Recall you want to be fast and automatic. It is a poor fit for anything needing reasoning or working out, because the format rewards speed and a student who needs thirty seconds to reason will simply lose. Use it for the recall layer and something slower for the rest.

Writing questions that survive the format

Keep the question short enough to read while moving, and make every wrong answer a mistake you have actually seen rather than an obvious throwaway. Distractors written to be silly teach elimination, not content. When the wrong answers are real misconceptions, where players swim tells you which one is in the room.

Where it fits in a session

It works best as a change of pace rather than the whole thing. Attention decays inside a single format regardless of how good the format is, so a round of this after a stretch of slower work resets the room. One round, then back. It is the punctuation, not the sentence.
